Steps for Preparing Your Academic Grant
One Page InfographicGrants Management Handbook
Step 1: Communicate with the grants office
Please contact the Office of Academic Research and Grants by completing the short form. Your inquiry will be directed to the appropriate team member for assistance. We look forward to supporting your research and grant-related needs.
Step 2: Plan
Before you start writing your proposal, take time to get organized. Especially for complex grants - those that may require 100+ hours of effort with multiple people playing a role - the overall project management of the process is half the battle. Even for relatively simple grants, solid organization will save you time and stress
Step 3: Budget
PLNU recommends you create a draft budget prior to writing the grant narrative. Writing a grant budget before the narrative is a strategic approach that clarifies project scope and goals, ensures realistic planning, and aligns the narrative with financial requirements. Link to Budget Template.
Step 4: Write the narrative
Once you have created a draft budget, it is time to start working on the heart of your grant proposal: the Narrative. Start by transcribing the information provided in the solicitation into a word document that will become your grant proposal.
Step 5: IRB requirements
If the proposal involves human subjects, then the IRB Committee must be consulted. IRB documentation, when necessary, is expected to be submitted with the grant proposal to the funding agency.
- IRB will determine what level of review is necessary
- IRB will generate the necessary documentation for the granting agency after their review is complete.
Please visit the PLNU IRB info page for more details
Step 6: Final review process
- At least 14 days prior to grant submission deadline all grants must be reviewed by the following:
- Appropriate unit leader
- Director of Academic Studies and Grants (OARG)
Step 7: Final Submission
- Only after the review is completed, can the grant proposal be submitted to the funding agency.
- If this is a Federal grant, the OARG is required to submit the grant on your behalf. Be sure to allow 5 days for the submission process by OARG.
Step 8: Post reward
Attend workshops, training programs, and community events relevant to your industry to learn, grow, and keep up-to-date with new resources and information.
