Program Overview

Do you want to make computer systems stronger and help protect them from being hacked? Do you excel at working on puzzles? Do you enjoy poking around in computer systems to see what they do? If so, you should consider a major in computer science with an emphasis in cyber security.

PLNU cyber security majors learn how computers work — from the underlying hardware to the use of high-level application programs. In addition, they learn about computer security and how to defend computer system infrastructure. Computer scientists with a background in cyber security protect commercial and government computer systems and aid law enforcement in prosecuting hackers. With an emphasis in cyber security, you will gain the broader background often required by defense and security industries.

The Department of Mathematical, Information, and Computer Sciences (MICS) is committed to working with you to help you discover who you are called to be. As a computer science major at PLNU, you will be immersed in a curriculum that not only allows you to gain and apply the broad knowledge of your discipline, but also aims to help you develop the characteristics necessary to be an effective member of the communities where you work and live. Software Developers and Software Quality Assurance Analysts

2020 Median annual salary $110,140

Software developers design and create computer applications or programs. Software developers also determine other requirements, such as security. They design a program and then work closely with programmers who write computer code. However, some developers write code themselves instead of giving instructions to programmers. Software quality assurance analysts and testers identify problems with applications or programs and report the defects. 

What it takes to be a software developer or software quality assurance analyst: 

  • Programming and coding knowledge
  • Understanding of how to create test plans, scenarios, and procedures for new software
  • Creativity and ingenuity for model and diagram making
  • An understanding of designing and developing software

Cybersecurity Analysts 

2020 Median annual salary $69,754

Cybersecurity analysts' main job is to keep their employer’s sensitive, proprietary, and personal information safe from technological threats. A security analyst works with others to find flaws in their employer’s security systems and develop solutions. Analysts will also examine reports, data, and analytics to identify potential threats, they then use this information to develop solutions and new ideas that can better protect their companies’ information.

Computer Forensic Analysts

Computer forensic analysts use cutting edge forensic tools in combination with their computer science background in order to assist law enforcement with solving cyber crimes and retrieving evidence. Computer forensic analysts typically hold a bachelor's degree in computer science with a background in criminal justice.
