Beach + Surf

Don’t forget your SPF — PLNU has premier access to some of the best surf in San Diego (if you don’t believe us, ask Surfer Magazine who ranked as the #3 Top Surf College in America). Students have the unique experience of being just footsteps away from the current (which makes a sunny, surf break the perfect way to relax and unwind between classes). But even if you venture away from our home campus, you’ll always be close to the warm Southern California waters. San Diego has over 70 miles of beaches, and you can enjoy them through surfing, sunbathing, and sand castles!

Restaurants

San Diego is home to some of the best restaurants in the nation — why not take advantage of it? Whether you’re craving traditional seaside food or Baja Mexican cuisine, the food scene will never disappoint. It’s even been dubbed as a “Best New Foodie City” by Thrillist Magazine. Rest assured, if you need a caffeine jolt, a scoop of ice cream, or a burrito on the go, there are many popular spots available across the city to satisfy your cravings.

Parks for Picnics, Play & Outdoor Workouts

Just a mile down the road, grassy areas like Point Loma Community Park offer close proximity to campus while also being a place if you need to get off campus for a bit. It offers lots of open space for picnics, creative activities like painting, or relaxing. And if you want to get your steps in, these parks are great places to stay fit (no student gym membership required!).

Got a couple of hours to spare?

Here are a few more Loma-local activities that we would recommend!

  • Snorkel with curious seals, bright orange Garibaldi damselfish, and friendly leopard sharks (don’t worry they aren’t dangerous) in La Jolla Cove.
  • Journey just a few miles down the point to Cabrillo National Monument where you can explore an old lighthouse, learn about San Diego's history, and whale watch.
  • Farmer’s markets across San Diego happen nearly every day of the week. Be sure to check this website for times and when to make your visit!
  • Take advantage of quiet places on PLNU's campus like McCollough Park to read a good book or set up a hammock and relax.
Balboa Park is a must for any lover of history, art, and culture. Make sure to check out their free things to do while you’re in the area — perfect for students on a college budget!
  • Grab a tee time, some friends, and a frisbee to play at the Morley Field Disc Golf Course.
