When you live in Point Loma, there’s never a shortage of scenic places to venture out. Whether you enjoy the coastal or suburban lifestyle, you can always find a running route that works best for you. Whether you’re a runner, walker, hiker, or just want a study break — here are our best running routes near the PLNU campus.

Benefits of Running & Walking for College Students

Let’s face it: it can be hard to balance the college lifestyle. Studying, making healthy choices, resting, and finding time for yourself can sometimes feel like a chore. However, making time to stay active is crucial for college students. Everyday movement isn’t just for physical health — activities such as running or walking can help reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety for students while also improving general mood.

Physical activity promotes blood flow to the brain and makes sure it gets the necessary oxygen it needs to function on a daily basis. By adding a daily run or walk into your daily routine, you may find it improves your concentration while in class.

Point Loma Neighborhood

You don’t need to travel far to get a different scenery. Students can leave the PLNU campus through the Alumni Lawn gate to run through a Point Loma neighborhood. Scattered with gorgeous beachside homes and stunning water views, it’s a favorite for any student who wants to stick close while also getting off campus.

Ocean Beach Pier

This trek from campus is for anyone looking for a quick getaway. Just three miles along the way, this route is easy to navigate and allows you to explore the neighboring Ocean Beach — stacked with coffee and shop pit stops (and potential sea lion sightings!). This destination run is a favorite among students because it’s easily accessible from the campus cliffs to the pier.

Shelter Island

If you head south from campus towards Shelter Island, this waterfront route is mostly flat, offering a steady run along the harbor. This route follows the Harbor Drive area, passing through Liberty Station and along the water's edge, where you can take in views of the San Diego Bay and skyline.

Cabrillo National Monument

Approximately 6 miles there and back, Cabrillo National Monument is a unique destination with a view of the peninsula and downtown San Diego. This would be a great running route for anyone looking for a flat-surfaced trail rather than the usual hills Loma students are used to.

Sunset Cliffs National Park

It’s a popular choice for sunset-watching, hiking, and enjoying the outdoors for a reason. With its breathtaking ocean views, Sunset Cliffs is a great choice for any runner looking to cover a lot of ground. The Sunset Cliffs Coastal Trail is a relatively flat and easy trail to walk or run, with plenty of opportunities to stop, take photos, and admire the landscape. And just like the name suggests, going for a sunset run on the cliffs is a Point Loma staple.

Along the Trail

Need a pit stop? Whether you need a caffeine boost, a moment to relax, or just want to stretch your legs, there are plenty of stops along these running routes to keep you refreshed and recharged.

Stop by OB Beans during your run to Ocean Beach to refuel or just enjoy the atmosphere the Loma-approved coffee shop has to offer. If you’re in the mood for a quick 10-minute walk down Lomaland Drive, stop by Peet’s to start your journey. If you need a more comprehensive list of coffee spots, we’ve got you covered.

Point Loma also has great dog parks in the surrounding areas. If you need a break during your afternoon run, finding one of these parks is a great place to dog-watch while also making the most of your time spent outdoors.

You don’t need to venture out far from Point Loma’s amazing views and benefits. Whether you’re a runner, a walker, or just need a quick escape, starting from campus is always a good idea. Because Point Loma has so much to see, students can go from class to their afternoon jaunt without giving it much thought. With stunning views and routes for both beginners and experienced runners, these paths are your gateway to discovering the beauty around you. Your next great run awaits!
