Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) Dining has successfully increased its Green Restaurant Association (GRA) certification from two stars to three stars, marking a notable achievement in its sustainability efforts. This milestone is largely credited to the increase in vegan and vegetarian dining options, which have significantly contributed to the university’s environmentally conscious initiatives.
The GRA certification evaluates various categories such as energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction, and sustainable food sourcing. By implementing these practices, PLNU Dining accumulated well more than the 175 GreenPoints™ required to achieve the three-star rating. In addition to its expanded plant-based menu, the dining team focused on reducing single-use disposables, improving recycling programs, and sourcing sustainable produce from FreshPoint.
“Achieving this three-star rating reflects our dedication to making dining at PLNU as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible,” said Timothy Fessler, General Manager of PLNU Dining. “By incorporating more plant-based options and working with partners like FreshPoint, we’ve been able to offer healthier choices while lowering our environmental footprint.”
PLNU Dining’s commitment to sustainability also extends to energy-efficient practices, using eco-friendly cleaning products, and enhancing waste management systems. This accomplishment is part of PLNU’s larger mission to provide students with nutritious and environmentally sustainable dining options, creating a healthier campus and a greener future.
