Point Loma Nazarene University's College of Health Sciences and Pre-Health Student Association proudly held its 5th annual Faith-Based Pre-Health Conference, "Serving Through Healing," on March 16, 2024, in Latter Hall. This year's conference saw an impressive turnout, with around 70 students from PLNU, local colleges, and high schools in attendance, bringing the total number of participants to about 100, including speakers and representatives. Conference attendees were hosted by Sarah Martinho, President of the Point Loma Pre-Health Student Association; Dr. Jordan Buzzell, Pediatric Dentist and Pre-Health Mentor; Dr. Sara Choung, Director of Health Professions Advising; and Dr. Jeff Sullivan, Dean of the College of Health Sciences.
The conference was graced by distinguished speakers and leaders in the health professions. The day-long event offered a packed itinerary focused on the intersection of faith and healthcare. Highlights included the keynote address "Love is the Strongest Medicine" by Dr. Steven Eisenberg, local Medical Oncologist and Hematologist, workshops on health disparities, lifestyle and culinary medicine, the ethics of embryo selection, and panels on health professions and admissions. A unique medical mystery solving session closed the conference, engaging attendees in interactive learning.
Participants also enjoyed a networking lunch on Wasson Seaview Terrace, offering a chance to connect with speakers, representatives, and fellow attendees in a casual setting. The event exemplified the university's commitment to nurturing future healthcare professionals who are not only skilled but also compassionate and ethically grounded in their practice.
Representatives from various sectors of the health profession, including the Air Force, Army, Navy, PLNU Occupational Therapy and Physician Assistant graduate students, and community organizations like Hope for San Diego, were present, providing students with a broad perspective on career opportunities in healthcare.
"Serving Through Healing" continues to be a beacon for aspiring health professionals, fostering a community of learners eager to integrate their faith with their calling to heal. Point Loma Nazarene University looks forward to hosting future conferences and continuing to support students in their journey towards impactful careers in healthcare.
