PLNU Appoints Dr. Walter Augustine to Cabinet Role Focused on Community Success and Belonging

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — March 26, 2025 — Point Loma Nazarene University is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Walter Augustine as Vice President for Intercultural Engagement, Retention & Community Success Initiatives. This new Cabinet-level role reflects PLNU’s strategic commitment to cultivating a community of belonging and supporting the holistic success of every student, staff, and faculty member.

Dr. Augustine has served as Associate Vice President for Diversity & Belonging at PLNU since 2022. In his new role, he will lead efforts that deepen intercultural engagement, improve student and employee retention, and implement initiatives that foster a campus environment where all can thrive. His leadership will be instrumental in advancing key priorities outlined in the university’s OnePLNU plan.

A seasoned diversity professional, scholar, and pastor, Dr. Augustine holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Howard University, a Master of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in Theology and Ethics from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. Prior to joining PLNU, he served as Director of Intercultural Education and Research at Biola University.

Dr. Augustine’s passion for holistic discipleship was ignited during a transformative inner-city missions experience in 1991. Since then, he has dedicated his career to nurturing inclusive Christian communities that reflect the diversity of the Body of Christ. His leadership continues to shape PLNU’s commitment to grace-filled service, authentic belonging, and Christ-centered development.

This appointment is effective June 1, 2025.
