Coastal Cities Jazz Band

Founded in 1997, the Coastal Cities Jazz Band has been bringing the vibrant sounds of big band music to audiences across Southern California and Arizona for nearly three decades. Originally the vision of Gary Adcock and Don Caneva, the band continues to thrive as a premier ensemble dedicated to preserving and celebrating the golden era of jazz.

Comprised of 17 of San Diego’s finest musicians, the band features both seasoned professionals and passionate performers, many of whom have played with legendary big bands from the 1940s and 1950s, including those of Harry James, Les Brown, Stan Kenton, Count Basie, and Jimmy Dorsey. Others have honed their craft in military bands or as dedicated music educators, all sharing a deep love for performing and keeping the big band tradition alive. Today, under the leadership of Chris Montgomery—who also plays guitar—the band continues to captivate audiences with its dynamic performances.

The Coastal Cities Jazz Band emerged from the acclaimed Coastal Communities Concert Band, known worldwide for its exceptional Pops Concerts. The group enjoyed a close collaboration with the legendary Sammy Nestico, a composer and arranger whose illustrious 60-year career included 15 years with Count Basie, work as the White House Musical Director for Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, and collaborations with icons such as Frank Sinatra, Quincy Jones, and Michael Bublé.

The band has been privileged to perform alongside world-renowned soloists, including Wayne Bergeron, Eric Marienthal, Andy Martin, Willie Murillo, Becky Martin, Carol Welsman, and Bernie Dresel. Over the years, the stage has also been graced by remarkable vocalists such as Draeh Jirnae, Leonard Tucker Jr., Michael Ruhl, Sharon Owens, Rosemary Watson, Ruby Presnell, and the Evans Brothers (Rick & Tom). In 2016, the band was honored to be featured at TEDxSanDiego, further cementing its reputation as a premier jazz ensemble.
